Human trial on anti-aging compound of pomegranate compounds is successful
Urolithin, a biomolecule metabolite found in pomegranates, and other fruits could slow down certain aging processes. Amazentis is an EPFL spin-off that, together with EPFL, the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics and EPFL, published a paper detailing the results of a clinical trial in Nature Metabolism.
After 50, skeletal muscle mass and strength begin to decline. A recent clinical study involving two EPFL entities – spin-off Amazentis, and the Laboratory of Integrative Systems Physiology, (LISP) – showed that urolithin A – a compound derived by biomolecules in fruits like pomegranates – could slow this process down by improving the mitochondria – the cells’ powerhouses. The results of this trial were published in Nature Metabolism today. It also shows that the compound is safe to ingest.
