Bill Andrews, the man who would stop time: his quest to conquer aging

The Man Who Would Stop Time

Circa 2011

Bill Andrews tells me that his feet are so big, when he first put skin on water, he broke the Southern California barefoot distance record. He then became ambitious and set out to break the world speed record. He says that when the tow rope broke at 80 mph \”they took me out on a stretcher.\”

Andrews, 59, is a lean 6-foot-3 and wears a close-cropped salt-and-pepper Vandyke and, for today’s outing, a silver running jacket. Andrews is a 6-foot-3, lean man who wears a salt and pepper Vandyke with a short, close-cropped haircut. For today’s run, Andrews also wore a silver running coat, which nicely completed a package that resembled an astronaut from the Right Stuff era. In fact, he is one of the best ultramarathoners that America has to offer. Andrews’ racing exploits give me pause as an out-of shape former occasional runner. He says, \”I’ve run 100 miles and finished, turned around and met friends on the course that are still coming in.\” \”I have been in races where I step over the bodies of people who are collapsing, and I feel great.\”

Andrews: \”I want cure my own aging and the aging of my family and friends, as well as my investors. I also want to make tons of money.\” Andrews says that his return to running was inspired by an epiphany he had when he, along with a small group of scientists from Sierra Sciences at the time, were working in the laboratory 14-18 hours per day for five years. They had been obsessively trying to make a breakthrough. His doctor finally told him that he would die young. Andrews said, \”I thought to myself, God, I don’t think I want to cure the aging process and then die.\”
