The Anti-Aging Compound NMN improves muscle glucose metabolism in postmenopausal women with prediabetes

The anti-aging compound increases muscle glucose metabolism

According to new research from Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, a natural compound that was previously shown to improve metabolic health and counteract the effects of aging in mice also has clinically relevant benefits in humans.

In a small clinical trial, a compound called NMN (nicotinamide monnucleotide), which was administered to postmenopausal womans with prediabetes, the compound improved insulin’s ability to increase glucose absorption in the skeletal muscles, which is often abnormal in people who have obesity, prediabetes, or Type 2 Diabetes. NMN improved the expression of genes involved in muscle remodeling and structure. The treatment did not reduce blood sugar or blood pressure or improve blood lipid profiles, or increase insulin sensitivity or liver fat.

The study published in Science on April 22, is the first randomized trial that examines the metabolic effects of NMN in humans.
