Researchers in China have discovered a new gene associated with Alzheimer’s disease
BEIJING (Xinhua), Dec. 28, 2008 — A Chinese group of researchers has identified a genetic variant that is a major factor in the development and progression of Alzheimer’s in Han Chinese. Han Chinese are the largest ethnic group within China.
National Science Review (CAS), an English-language journal, published the study recently.
Alzheimer’s (AD) is a progressive, irreversible brain disorder which slowly destroys the memory, thinking abilities and ability to perform simple tasks. Around 48 million people are affected by the disease worldwide. The number of those affected is expected to rise with an aging population. There is currently no cure.
