Two paths to aging revealed by breakthrough in cell research

A press release explaining the research explained that they used microfluidics and computer modeling to find out that half of cells age due to a gradual decrease in the stability the nucleolus. This is a region of DNA within the cell where the key components for protein-producing factories are synthesized. The other half of the cells age because of mitochondrial dysfunction, which is the energy-producing unit of the cell.

Researchers who study aging discovered that cells follow two distinct aging paths. Scientists can predict the aging process of a cell by observing it early.
