The Benefits of Resveratrol on the Cerebral Vascular System and the Cognitive Functions in Postmenopausal Women
Resveratrol can reduce brain aging.
Inadequate cerebral microcirculation is a major contributor to cognitive decline with age. In a pilot trial of postmenopausal females, we found that supplementing with a low dosage of phytoestrogen resveratrol for 14 weeks improved cognitive and cerebrovascular functions. Since then, we have conducted a larger and longer-term study to confirm the benefits. Women aged 45-85 (n = 129) who were postmenopausal were randomly assigned to receive 75 mg of trans-resveratrol or a placebo twice daily over a period of 12 months. The effects on cognition were evaluated, as well as cerebral blood flow and cerebrovascular responsiveness. Resveratrol, when compared to placebo, improved overall cognition (P 0.001), and reduced the decline in CVR in response to cognitive stimuli. View Full-Text.
