Researchers from the CNIO and Dr. Maria Blasco have published a study that looks at the effects of telomere shortening and telomerase deficiencies on the brain.

This study addresses a particular aspect of telomere loss, which is one of the hallmarks of ageing. Telomeres consist of repeating DNA sequences (TTAGGG), which can reach up to 15,000 base pair length. They are located at the end of chromosomes and act as protective caps. Telomeres prevent damage, prevent chromosomes fusing together, and stop base pair sequences being lost at the end of chromosomes during cell replication.
