Mitochondria, the power stations in every cell of our body, convert the food we consume into energy
As we age, they start to break down due to damage.
MitoSENS aims to reverse this damage in order to prevent age-related illness. In their first experiment, they were able to demonstrate that the allotopic expression from two mtDNA nucleus genes could restore several functions in patient cells.
MitoSENS is running a crowd-funding campaign on Lifespan.io in order to raise money for the next critical step of this project. Scientists are interested in determining if the mitochondrial DNA gene backups can be replaced by their mutant counterparts and if they could restore mitochondrial function.
