MitoQ supplementation improves vascular function in healthy older adults

Chronic Supplementation with a Mitochondrial (MitoQ), Improves Vascular function in Healthy Older Adults
A human clinical trial was conducted on the supplement MitoQ earlier this month. The results were quite interesting. We decided to take a closer look at the results and talk about them.

The production of reactive oxygen species by mitochondria is one key factor in age-related vascular disease. Our laboratory has shown that supplementation with the mitochondrial-targeted antioxidant MitoQ improves vascular endothelial function by reducing mitochondrial reactive oxygen species and ameliorates arterial stiffening in old mice, but the effects in humans are unknown. We aimed to apply our preclinical findings in humans to determine the safety and effectiveness of MitoQ. In a double-blind, randomized, placebo controlled, crossover study, 20 healthy older adults aged 60-79 with impaired endothelial functions (brachial arterial flow-mediated dilation of 6%) were given oral MitoQ or placebo for 6 weeks.
