According to researchers at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine of Temple University, adding extra virgin olive oils (EVOOs) to your diet is a great way to keep your brain young. EVOO, a superfood rich in antioxidants that protect cells, is known for its many health benefits. It can also help slow down diseases associated with aging such as cardiovascular disease. Previous LKSOM studies on mice showed that EVOO preserved memory and protected the brain from Alzheimer’s.

LKSOM scientists have shown in a recent study of mice, published in the journal Aging Cell that another group of age-related diseases, tauopathies, can be added. Tauopathies are characterized as a gradual buildup in the brain of an abnormal form a protein known as tau. This leads to dementia, a decline of mental function. These findings are the very first to suggest EVOO may protect against a particular type of mental decline associated with tauopathy, known as frontotemporal degeneration.

Alzheimer’s is a form of dementia. The hippocampus, the memory center of the brain, is the primary area affected. Frontotemporal degeneration affects areas of the head near the ears and forehead. The symptoms usually appear between the ages of 40 and 65. They include personality changes, problems with writing and language, and a gradual decline in memory and learning from previous experiences.
