Engie and Macquarie Partner up to Build 150MW/150MWh Hazelwood Battery

Engie and Macquarie fund 150MW of big batteries at Hazelwood

Engie and Macquarie will build a 150MW battery on the site of the shuttered Hazelwood Coal generator.

The French energy giant Engie will fund the construction of an 150MW/150MWh large battery on the site of Hazelwood’s brown coal generator, which is now closed.

The announcement comes four years after Engie shut down Australia’s dirtiest coal-fired power plant. It continues the trend to use the sites of old or closed coal and gas plants for battery storage in order to support the transition to 100% renewable energy.

The Hazelwood Battery has been under construction for some time. It will be built by US-based Fluence and maintained over 20 years. Fluence is using its AI-enabled bid system and sixth-generation Gridstack.
