Early Health Conditions Linked to Subsequent Alzheimer’s Disease

A cohort study found that some health conditions related to appeared early and consistently, long before the diagnosis was made, while others were only significant later.

According to Lori Beason Held, PhD, from the National Institute on Aging, Baltimore, and her co-authors, for people who had a subsequent Alzheimer’s diagnosis, the first and most consistent association at all times over a period of 15 years included depression, erectile dysfunction, gait irregularities, hearing loss, nervous and musculoskeletal symptomatology, and a variety of other symptoms.

Researchers reported in Annals of Neurology that for those who were eventually diagnosed with vascular disease, the first and most consistent association across 13 years was an abnormal electrocardiogram.
